Typhoon
is a trio with a distinctive sound and aesthetic. Traveling between
original compositions, open improvisation and reinvented jazz
standards, there is much diversity of texture and mood. All three
musicians are adept at at rhythmic interplay and metric explorations,
giving the music an exciting edge. The seamless flow from piece to
piece gives the feeling of a sonic journey.
Each member of the group
has extensive international experience. Burhoe, a long time student of
the great Zakir Hussein, is currently very active in the Indian
classical music scene. He tours in Australia, Japan, and Europe, as
well as in the USA. His more Westernized musical forays have been with
Bill Douglas and Curandero. Weidenmueller performs regularly with
pianist Kenny Werner, Ari Honig and Madeline Peroux. His German
heritage meshes with 15 years in New York City plus two years in the
wild west of Colorado and have contributed to a perspective linking the
visceral and the refined sensibilities. His wonderful technique is used
to communicate a poetic spirit. Lande is a romantic trickster drawn to
serious fun. He has deep roots in the jazz tradition that mix with his
love for the 12 tone and bitonal possibilities in New Music (a la
Stravinsky and Hindemith).
Typhoon speaks many
languages, sometimes simultaneously. The weather can be beautiful,
sunny and calm, but beware of dark swirling storms that blow in from
their imaginative sea. It is a listening experience that puts the
audience's ears on its toes. A tabla player who plays on chord
changes? Typhoon is World Music in the true sense of the
term; at times it sounds other worldly.
Join us for an intimate evening with
three amazing world class musicians in their return performance!
Last year's show was a sell out and a magical evening
of improvisation.
Art Lande
Grammy-nominated Art Lande is an internationally known pianist, composer, improviser, drummer and educator who has performed with a long list of the Who's Who in jazz, including Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw, Bobby Hutcherson, Steve Swallow, Charlie Haden, Kenny Wheeler, Sheila Jordan, Mark Isham, Paul McCandless, Jan Garbarek and many others.
His band, Rubisa Patrol, was formed in the mid 70's and worked through 1983, traveling to Europe often and recording with ECM Records. After teaching for three years in Switzerland, Lande moved to Boulder, Colorado, where he played a weekly performance for 15 years! Each week had different music and drew from a large list of different bands, members and seasonal special guests from nearly everywhere. Live performances are not to be missed, an occasion full of musical adventure and inspiration, spontaneity, warmth and soul.
Ty Burhoe
Ty Burhoe has been a disciple of the great tabla maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain, since 1990. From that time forward, Ty has been wholly dedicated to music as a career and as a spiritual path. Through his teacher's inspiration, he has established new territory for the tabla which continues to attract international acclaim. Ty is known for his sensitive accompaniment and melodious style. While his study of the classical tradition and his touring as a classical accompanist continues to grow, he is also internationally recognized for being instrumental in creating unusual collaborations that weave tabla with the traditions of Jazz, African, Flamenco, Rock, Celtic, Chinese, Bluegrass, and fusion. He has become well known not only for his talents as a tabla player, but also for his extensive experience as a recording and live concert producer. In 2004, he created the record label, Tala Records, and since 1994 has run a concert production company called Tala Productions. Ty works with a broad range of artists including Ustad Zakir Hussain, Art Lande, Krishna Das, Curandero (Miguel Espinoza), Ustad Sultan Khan, Tony Furtado, Bela Fleck, Walter Becker, Steve Gorn, Mamadou Diabate, Rick Alan, Howard Levy, Kitaro, Anindo Chatterjee, Roshan Bhartiya, Bill Dougals and many more.
